Cohabitation

Cohabitation

Many couples live together without either marrying or entering in to a civil partnership. The law for such couples on relationship breakdown is completely different from either divorce or dissolution.

There is no such thing as a common law marriage.

Many people wrongly believe they have a share in property or other capital assets simply as a result of living with their partner.  This can be a complicated area of law. Early and specialist guidance on entitlement is essential.

Many couples have written agreements in which they record their respective shares in property and capital assets. These are called cohabitation agreements which can help avoid problems if the relationship subsequently breaks down.

We offer experienced advice on all areas of cohabitation law.
